2021 Montana Tech Oredigger Football Team

Today marks 650 days since the last Montana Tech Football game. The good news is that counter is about to stop as the Orediggers host Eastern Oregon under the lights on Bob Green Field for the 2021 Copper Game Saturday night at 6 p.m.

Perhaps no one is more ready for Saturday than Head Football Coach Kyle Samson. Joining the Montana Tech coaching staff in 2019 as Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach Samson was selected to lead the Orediggers on January 21, 2020, and he has been waiting since to take the field for game day.

Coach Kyle SamsonSamson led the Flathead High School football program for five seasons before arriving in the Mining City. The Braves had one of the top offenses in the state, reaching the AA state title game in 2018 for the first time since 2000. Flathead also made the playoffs three out of his five seasons while in Kalispell.

Early in his career Samson served as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for seven seasons at Montana State-Northern 2007-14. The Lights offense was ranked in the top 10 nationally from 2011-13.

A player first, Samson was an all-state quarterback at Helena Capital High School. A three-time All-Conference selection for Montana State-Northern, Samson was the 2006 Frontier Conference Offensive Player of the Year. Samson finished his career with 5,303 yards passing and 1,591 yards on the ground, and along with his brother Marc, was inducted to the MSUN Hall of Fame this July.

As Samson takes the field Saturday, he will officially be the third generation of his family to coach in the Frontier Conference, continuing the legacy set by his father and grandfather.

Today we get the opportunity to check in with Coach Samson and learn a little more about him and his favorite parts of coaching.

Coach Samson high fiving playerWhat does it mean to you to be the Head Coach of Montana Tech Football?

I am extremely humbled and honored to be the Head Coach here! To be able to represent this incredible university and the wonderful community of Butte every day is awesome! I am very lucky to be living my dream of being a head coach in the Frontier Conference and so thankful to get to work with our great staff and student-athletes every day!

What is your coaching philosophy?

To be a relentlessly positive leader on and off the field every day. To be someone that my staff and my players can trust and they always know that they can COUNT ON ME. It all really revolves around our motto of COUNT ON ME. We must be able to hold ourselves and our peers accountable every day so that we can reach our goals. As a coach, you must always lead from the front and have a mindset that it's not about me it's about us. Servant leadership is a big deal to me. I would never ask my staff or my players to do something that I wouldn’t do myself.

coach celebratingYou have really instilled the importance of FAMILY for our university, the football program, coaches, and players? What does FAMILY mean to you?

FAMILY to me is everything. It’s the most important thing in my life and I have been very fortunate to have an amazingly supportive family my whole life.  Here at Tech, it means our Digger Family. We are all working together and trying to build something extremely special with our whole campus community and the community of Butte!

The support that we have received from everyone has been amazing and I am so thankful for the countless number of people who have helped us get to this point. I think people work harder and care more when they believe that someone cares about them. I want our players to believe that their Digger Family is a second Family for them and a home away from home!

For you, what qualities define a Montana Tech student-athlete?

Coach with players on lineI think the biggest one is being selfless. Always caring about others and trying to help someone out. I also think that being a Tech student-athlete takes a ton of hard work and sacrifice because of the championship-level academic and athletic programs that we have.

It's not easy being a student-athlete here because of the expectations that are put on them on and off the field. But I ultimately think our kids take an extreme amount of pride in being great in the classroom, within the community, and on the field and that takes a special person and special type of discipline and work ethic to be successful.

It has been awesome to get to know all the great staff and faculty members on campus and we sure appreciate all that they do for us and our student-athletes! The relationships and family atmosphere here at Tech is amazing!

It has been a long wait for this first game, what are you most looking forward to?
I think I'm most looking forward to our Digger Walk before the game with our players and families through the tailgates. Also just seeing the smiles on our players' and our fans' faces throughout the game knowing that Digger Football and the game that they love is back!

Our players, our staff, and our fans deserve this moment and I can't wait to be a part of that on Saturday night in front of the best fans in the Frontier Conference!

I just want to add a huge thank you to all of Digger Nation for all of your support throughout the past 2 Years! We wouldn’t be here without you and we sure appreciate all that you do for us and our FAMILY!
