Interested in Law School - Informational Session on October 31

Montana Tech students interested (or even just curious) about law school will have an informational opportunity when the University of Montana Law School comes recruiting at Tech on Wednesday, October 31st in the SUB Pintler Room. Students can have a one-on-one session between 11:00 and 2:00 and then there will be an open group session from 2:00 – 3:00 pm.

“There are huge opportunities in the law for Tech students,” said Dr. John M. Garic, Tech’s Pre-Law Advisor who is an attorney and former judge. “While the biggest opportunities in the law for Tech students are in Intellectual Property Law (patents, copyrights & trademarks), the law degree (the Juris Doctor) is very flexible so that you can teach on the university level, become a judge, you can be a sports agent, you can serve as a chief of staff for a senator, congressman or governor, you can go into politics yourself, or, of course, you can practice law in any number of specialty areas.”

Statistics of the past few years indicate that traditional law practice firms are adding lawyers to accommodate growing practice areas such as cybersecurity, data protection, labor, employment, oil & gas, employee retirement, intellectual property and health care. According to the US Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average annual salary for attorneys in Montana in 2017 was $83,150.

“Montana Tech graduates have proven their dominance in many industries,” said Dr. Garic. “I think it is time for them to make themselves known in the law as well. This informational session with the UM Law School is the first step on that road.”
