Montana Tech Geophysics Department Adds LIBS System with support from Newmont Goldcorp

Newmont Goldcorp, the world's leading gold mining company as a measured by assets, prospects, and talent, has provided generous support to the Geophysics Department at Montana Tech to purchase a portable Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) system. A handheld LIBS unit can quickly measure multi-element concentrations in a rock or soil sample.

This system will largely enhance the capacity of mineral exploration in the Department. Moreover, the LIBS unit will be used to support instruction in geophysics courses such as Elements of Geophysics, Gravity and Magnetic Exploration, Geophysics Field Camp, and Remote Sensing for the Earth Sciences.
