The SHIH Department’s Advisory Board (AB) provides invaluable input for shaping degree programs to meet the needs of employers. Membership includes alumni of all four degree programs, employers who regularly recruit on campus, and one representative of labor. It meets each spring to discuss and provide advice on current issues. The annual spring meeting typically starts on a Thursday afternoon in which various members present on topics of their choosing—many being career advice for student. On Fridays the Advisory Board meets for a full day. The morning involves breakout sessions on each of the degree programs; these include students and recent alumni of the respective program. Typically, meetings involving the entire Board include sessions for updates by campus leaders such as the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Research, and the Dean of the School of Mines and Engineering.

Leadership of the Advisory Board is provided by an elected Board Chair and Co-Chair. These leaders interact with the Department Head to set an agenda for each meeting. Examples of topics for two recent breakout sessions for the OSH degree program were substantive discussions of the three Program Educational Objectives and the 21 Student Outcomes. An example of an issue involving the entire Advisory Board was a discussion of how to align the SHIH Mission Statement with a revised Montana Tech Mission Statement.
