The Montana Tech Band’s Spring Concert, “Musicals, Movies and Marches” will be held on Sunday, May 4th in the Montana Tech Auditorium at 3:00 PM. This concert is free and the public is cordially invited.
The featured selection is The Man with the Golden Arm from the 1955 movie about Frankie Machine, an aspiring drummer and heroin addict. Music for the movie was written by Elmer Bernstein and is hard edged jazz. Showboat is a 1927 musical based on Edna Ferber’s novel of the same name. The music for Showboat was written by Jerome Kern and lyrics were by Oscar Hammerstein II. You will recognize the music in Showboat.
Great music has been written for the screen, Broadway and for TV. From a TV series of the same name we will perform Victory at Sea by Richard Rogers and Robert Bennett. The documentary series ran for 26 episodes. The musical score included 24 movements. The band version will include the main theme Victory at Sea, Guadalcanal March, and three other movements.
Rounding out the concert will be Innisfree by Carl Strommen. This Irish style music has everything from folk like tunes to dance-like jigs. Eiger:Journey to the Summit expresses a son’s quest to climb the mountain that claimed his father. A Findlandian Celebration by Noah Taylor is an uplifting work and pays homage to Finland.
No band concert is complete without a march, or two or three. The Montana Tech Band will play John Philip Sousa’s The Liberty Bell and Roland Seitz’s March Grandioso.
