Montana Technological University has been at the forefront of academic research since it was founded in 1900. Our campus is home to five research centers that facilitate our institution’s research into a number of fields, including the sustainable extraction and utilization of earth resources; design, and manufacturing processes of advanced materials; remediation, restoration, and assessment of the environment; and biomedical science and biotechnology.
Montana Tech has a reputation for excellence. In fiscal year 2022, our research teams and centers brought in a record amount of external funding, with $31 million awarded by leading and local agencies, including the National Science Foundation, Butte-Silver Bow government, and the National Institutes of Health.
Our institution may be smaller compared to other universities, but our reach is vast. Oredigger discoveries help shape the world in which we live, for the benefit of everyone. Montana Technological University and the Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division, Keyport, have entered into a historic cooperative research and development agreement.

The team, including graduate students, will be led by Associate Professor of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Dr. Avimanyu Das.

The National Science Foundation has awarded Montana Tech $1 million that will be used to purchase and maintain a multifunctional electron microscope.

Dr. Robin Bullock shared her expertise as a past project manager in mine closure with the Department of Energy so that they might gather information so they can formulate the parameters for the requests for project proposals for $500 million in funding.
Research Focus Areas
Our investigators can be separated into four fields of study, including Earth Resources: Sustainable Extraction & Utilization; Advanced Materials, Design, and Manufacturing Processes; Environmental Remediation, Assessment, & Restoration; and Biomedical Science & Biotechnology.
The Center for Advanced Materials Processing was founded in 1989 and focuses on analytical laboratory testing, materials laboratory testing, and research program management.
The Center for Environmental Remediation and Assessment oversees environmental solutions that aid in responsible natural resource use, development, closure and reuse.
Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology geoscientists collect, interpret, and distribute geologic data used to manage Montana’s water, land, mineral, and energy resources, and to assess geologic hazards.
The Underground Mine Education Center give hands-on learning opportunities for courses in mining, geological, environmental and metallurgical engineering and occupational safety and health.

Undergraduate students at Montana Tech have many opportunities to engage deeply in several types of diverse experiences that help prepare them for success in their careers. Undergraduate research—nationally recognized as a high-impact practice—is particularly strong on campus.
Alpha Tech has been granted several economic development grants by the Butte-Silver Bow, and has signed a letter of intent with the Praxis Center, a state-of-the-art rural medicine training facility in uptown Butte. Alpha Tech will exist in a business incubator within the Praxis Center, facilitating the relationship between Montana Tech and the Praxis Center, as well as connecting the MUS to small businesses built on MUS-invented technologies.
