Yellowstone National Park and Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology Release New Data

MBMG’s Map Service Will Increase Availability of Geospatial-Imagery in and Near Yellowstone National Park

BUTTE, MT - Yellowstone National Park and the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology (MBMG) recently agreed to release high resolution Digital Elevation Model (DEM) data and natural color aerial imagery for the area from Mammoth Hot Springs, Wyoming to Corwin Springs, Montana.

The agreement funds a new on-line map service that enables Yellowstone National Park to release imagery and data obtained through a collaborative research agreement with Utah State University. The imagery also supports MBMG’s ongoing monitoring efforts in the Yellowstone Controlled Ground Water Area designed to protect the Park’s hydrothermal resources.

The imagery/data can be accessed through the MBMG’s ArcGIS Server. Details on how to connect to the server are available on the MBMG Geographic Information Systems (GIS) web page: http://www.mbmg.mtech.edu/gis/gis-server.asp.

This collaboration provides a repository for existing data and a platform for the release of future data collected as part of the NPS and MBMG on-going monitoring efforts.

“This data release shows the value of working together” said Henry Heasler, Park Geologist for Yellowstone National Park.  “Not only are Yellowstone’s world-unique hydrothermal systems better protected by the MBMG’s utilization of the imagery, but other scientists, managers, and the general public can access the imagery for their needs.”

“This agreement and these data really enhance Montana’s ability to monitor, manage and protect groundwater and geothermal resources around the Park” Added John LaFave, Program Manager of Montana’s Ground Water Assessment Program.

Future releases of data will be announced via Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology website.
