Montana Tech Math Students Place at Virtual Conference

A team of Montana Technological University students presented at the virtual joint conference organized by the Pacific Inland Mathematics Undergraduate Conference (PiMUC) and Northwest Undergraduate Mathematics Symposium (NUMS) on Saturday, April 10, 2021.

The team consisting of students Michael Bruner, Heidi Steiger, and Marie Steiger and mentor Atish Mitra delivered an oral presentation titled, "Convex Mosaics and their Applications." The presentation detailed the work they have done at Montana Tech. In this work, they studied mathematical foundations of the combinatorial topology of convex mosaics and explored possible applications in classifying structures of grain boundaries in metallurgy.

The team’s presentation received one of 4 prizes. The team from Montana Tech competed against 15 teams from several universities.
