For the second year in a row, Montana Technological University has been named #1 on the list of Best Online Master's in Montana by Online Master’s Colleges (OMC).

Montana Tech is listed in the top spot, alongside Montana State University (#2), the University of Montana (#3), Montana State University-Billings (#4), and the University of Providence (#5).

Montana Tech offers two fully online master’s degree programs, a Master of Science in Industrial Hygiene and a Master of Project Engineering and Management. The recognition is a testament to Montana Technological University’s unparalleled quality in education. As part of the rankings OMC evaluates various criteria, including graduation and retention rates, affordability, program accreditation, and student support services. The Industrial Hygiene degree is one of seven such programs that is ABET accredited at the graduate level, and one of two that is both ABET accredited and available online.

Building from this success, in Fall 2025 Montana Tech will be launching seven new micro credentials in geological, metallurgical, mining, and environmental engineering, in collaboration with the Department of Defense, as outlined here.

“Montana Tech’s online graduate programs maintain the high level of faculty interaction and experiential learning that are a critical differentiator of a Tech education,” Vice Chancellor for Research and Dean of the Graduate School Angela Lueking said.  “Beyond online material, our Industrial Hygiene online degree and our new micro-credentials both offer a unique concentrated summer practicum, and our Project Engineering and Management degree includes an integrative capstone management project. These opportunities target the working professional, equipping them for professional advancement without an interruption to their daily life, nor a sacrifice in educational quality.”

Montana Tech has a 125-year legacy in natural resource engineering, driven by mining and extraction in the region. This institutional knowledge is now being transferred to 7 ‘tracks’, each consisting of a 10-credit hour course sequence, that allows for specialization and technical mastery. Each track includes 9-credit hours of technical theory delivered to remote learners via asynchronous delivery with regular substantive interactions (RSIs). Each track will also include a one-credit hour hands-on ‘practicum’ delivered in a concentrated format on Montana Tech’s campus, leveraging laboratory and pilot-scale facilities. The program upskills engineers in traditional fields, complementing B.S. or M.S. degrees, or serving as a stand-alone certification. It can also be used as technical electives or stacked toward an existing master’s degree.

The course content has been developed for online asynchronous delivery using national best practices, including regular substantive interactions between instructor and student. Learn more and apply here.
