Montana Technological University’s Graduate School is still accepting applications for three stackable certificates in extractive technologies that will launch this fall. The University is deploying a suite of innovative online programs that will allow engineers to upskill in mineral extraction industries from anywhere in the world that has internet access.

The three certifications students can earn include:

  • Extractive Metallurgy
  • Mining Deposit Exploration
  • Mining Engineering

“Our new extractive technologies certificates are designed to meet engineers where they are, both professionally and geographically,” Project Manager for the micro-credential program Dr. David Hutchins said. “These online programs empower engineering professionals and students to upskill from anywhere in the world, combining flexible remote learning with an immersive, hands-on experience in our state-of-the-art laboratories and the historic mines of Butte. Generous participant support packages are available with tuition waivers and travel support making advanced training more accessible than ever.”

Courses are designed for technical mastery for students that have completed engineering fundamentals, students assessments incorporate synthesis, analysis, and design. Each Track includes 9-credit hours of technical theory delivered to remote learners via asynchronous delivery. Each track will also include a one-credit hour hands-on ‘practicum’ delivered in a concentrated format on Montana Tech’s campus, leveraging laboratory and pilot-scale facilities. The program upskills engineers in traditional fields, complementing B.S. or M.S. degrees, or serving as a stand-alone certification. It can also be used as technical electives or stacked toward an existing master’s degree.

The curriculum was created through a n educational workforce award from the Department of Defense using Defense Production Act (DPA) authorities. The $6.5 million project will address critical workforce development needs in metallurgical, geological, mining, and environmental engineering.

Four additional certifications will launch in Fall 2026:

  • Mineral Project Management and Evaluation
  • Environmental Management for Mining Operations
  • Mineral Processing
  • Production Geology
