With diverse interests from metallurgy to nursing, these incredible student leaders provide campus tours, serve on student discussion panels, help out at campus events, and are collectively a great resource for prospective students considering Tech.

Dawson RoestiDawson Roesti

Major: Biological Sciences (Cellular and Molecular Track)
Year: Senior
Hometown: Butte, Montana

  1. Why Montana Tech: I chose to attend Montana Tech because I saw Tech as a great opportunity to further my education while still living in my hometown. Tech is an amazing school and it has the pre-professional health pathway I was interested in. So, for me, it was an obvious decision!
  2. Plans after Tech: After Tech I plan to go on to medical school to become an Orthopedic Surgeon. 
  3. A celebrity (dead or alive) I would like to meet at the campus coffee shop: I think it’d be neat to run into Christopher Nolan in the campus coffee shop. He has directed some of my favorite movies with some incredible plot twists and it would be interesting to hear what goes on in his head. 
  4. The animal I most relate to or identify with: I think I most identify with Red Pandas. I aspire to be as happy and carefree as Red Pandas seem to be. 
  5. Involvement on campus: I am currently the president of the Biology Club, a TA in the Anatomy Lab, and I do research as well.

  1. Favorite event(s) at Tech: As a student going into my fourth year, M-Days have always been a great experience on campus. M-Days are held every day, the last week of classes in Spring. Our student government fills the days with cookouts, scavenger hunts, and more!
  2. Research projects: As a student in Computer Science, my research interests are in device control and data gathering automation using microcontrollers or controller boards. 
  3. Hardest class I have taken: In my opinion, the hardest class I’ve taken thus far has been Computer Architecture, where you learn how to code in assembly language.
  4. Plans after Tech: After Tech I plan to get my master’s degree in Computer Engineering. I may also end up working in the industry as I work on my masters. 
  5. A celebrity (dead or alive) I would like to meet at the campus coffee shop: I would love to meet up with Harrison Ford in the campus coffee shop. I am a big Star Wars and Indiana Jones fan!

Evan GuengrichEvan Guengerich

Major: Mechanical Engineering
Year: Junior
Hometown: Gardiner, Montana

  1. The animal I most relate to or identify with: Wolves. They like freedom around them and like to explore, much like the adrenaline junkie in me. They are intelligent and like to think but aren't afraid of working in a team. Plus, I took a quiz and that’s what it told me.
  2. The best residence hall on campus (in my opinion): In my opinion Centennial Hall is the best res hall on campus. I like the location of the building and that the double rooms have sinks.
  3. My hero: My hero is my father. He has always been there for me, taught me how to be a hard worker, and to make the most of life.
  4. Three celebrities I would invite to a dinner party: I would invite Neil DeGrasse Tyson, Shaquille O’Neal, and Keven Hart to a dinner party. I feel like Tyson and I could have crazy, cool, conversations, Shaq has had such an awesome and interesting life that I would love to hear about, and Kevin Hart is just a vibe and would be hilarious to have dinner with.
  5. Research projects: As a Junior I worked in the biochar lab, where I worked on using biochar surfaces and mechanical systems to accelerate carbon dioxide capture. Which means we’re trying to take carbon dioxide out of the air and recycle it. Also, last year I worked on the classified Phantom Project, for the military, as well.

Rilee GreenRilee Green

Major: Civil Engineering
Year: Junior
Hometown: Butte, Montana

  1. What I think makes Butte special: I think the people are what make Butte special! This city has some of the nicest people I've met and it really feels like a community here.
  2. Three celebrities I would invite to a dinner party: I would invite Adam Sandler, because who wouldn’t want Adam Sandler at their dinner party, Stevie Nicks, because she’s been one of my favorite singers since middle school, and Roger Federer, because he’s the GOAT of tennis.
  3. One thing I cannot go a day without: I can’t go a day without my watch!
  4. Involvement on campus: On campus I am involved in the American Society of Civil Engineers, Concrete Canoe Club, and Swing Dance Club.
  5. In 5 years I hope to be: Homesteading on a couple of acres while using my degree in either construction or the design field.

Samantha MooreSamantha Moore

Major: Occupational Safety & Health (OSH)
Year: Senior
Hometown: Big Timber, Montana

  1. My weirdest study hack: To prepare for every exam I have to study two hours beforehand. Even if the test is at 8AM. I study for a few days ahead of time of course, but on test day I must refresh and activate my photographic memory.
  2. Plans after Tech: After Tech I plan to either get into the insurance side of Occupational Safety & Health or become a safety engineer at a construction company. With a Bachelor of Science in OSH there are several career path options, so I think it’s important to keep options open and investigate. 
  3. Involvement on campus: On campus I am currently a member of the American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP), I am a member of the Women’s Golf team, and am a Student Prospector!
  4. Favorite event(s) at Tech: I love any sporting event at Tech, because there are so many people involved. Tech’s football tailgating is a great way to meet people, participate in games, eat free food, and cheer on our Orediggers, which means a lot to them. We also have intramural sports on campus that are a super fun way to play with your friends. 
  5. The animal I most relate to or identify with: The animal I wish I could say is dogs, because I feel like I’m a dog whisperer. However, the animal I think I most identify with is a raccoon. I am curious about all sorts of things, I seek out new experiences, and I am a creative problem solver. I’m also excited to meet and be a friendly face to incoming students!

Double Major: Software Engineering & Computer Science
Year: Junior
Hometown: Anaconda, Montana

  1. Favorite class at Tech: My favorite class has been Embedded Systems with Bryce Hill! I loved the hands-on experience of combining code with electronics.
  2. Favorite spot on campus: Big Butte Open Space Park. It’s so cool to have such a large area for hiking and mountain biking right next to campus. It makes for a great place to escape to after a long day of classes!
  3. One thing most people might be surprised to learn about me: People might be surprised to learn that I used to be a Zipline Tour Guide at Montana Zipline Adventures in Anaconda, Montana.
  4. Plans after Tech: After graduation I hope to work on software in the aviation industry, which might include drones, avionics, or flight simulators.
  5. Involvement on campus: On campus I have been involved in Chi Alpha, The National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS), and the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). I also tutor for the computer science department.

Sydney DoyleSydney Doyle

Major: Nursing
Year: Senior
Hometown: Butte, Montana

  1. Plans after Tech: After graduation I will be able to take my NCLEX (the state of Montana’s nursing licensure exam). Once I pass my licensure exam and am certified to practice as an RN in Montana, I hope to start our working on the labor and delivery floor of NICU over in Bozeman. Ultimately, I hope to end up back in Butte but am excited to have an opportunity to step outside my comfort zone to start my career. 
  2. Favorite time of year, at Tech: My favorite time of year at Tech is fall. I absolutely love looking out across town and seeing all the different colored leaves as they are changing. It is so beautiful and the weather seems to be just right.
  3. Favorite class at Tech: My overall favorite class at Tech has been Nursing Care of the Childbearing Family. The course covered the many different components that make up obstetrics (pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum, etc.) nursing and I found it so interesting. 
  4. Hardest class I have taken: By far, my hardest class has been Nursing Pharmacology. I took this course when I was just starting out in the nursing program at Tech. At that point, we had not yet had any hands-on clinical experience with medications, so it was hard to understand all the concepts that were being presented to us. It wasn’t until later in the program when we were able to see just how these prescribed medications benefit patients and their health conditions that everything began to make more sense to me.
  5. Favorite spot in Butte: There are some great stops to make in Butte, but my favorite is Cassagranda’s Steakhouse. This restaurant is located in uptown Butte and serves some of the best food around. You get bread, salad and soup, your main course, and ice cream all for a very reasonable price. Not to mention, on Thursdays they serve sushi. It is so worth a stop in!

Juniors

Andy LarsonAndy Larson

Major: Construction Technology & Carpentry
Year: Senior
Hometown: Salt Lake City, Utah

  1. Favorite class at Tech: My favorite class so far has been, Business Law. Professor Sam Cox has a lot of first-hand experience in the field and is super knowledgeable, so he has a lot of really interesting and relevant stories.
  2. What I think makes Butte special: I think the unique history and it being a very old town makes Butte special. The combination makes for some very cool old buildings and lots of awesome sights around the city. Plus the location is very close to all the outdoor activities you could ever want.
  3. Favorite place to grab food off campus: My favorite place to eat off campus is definitely Christina's Cocina. I was put onto it by a co-worker and it is some great food! I love the cilantro chicken roll.
  4. Favorite event(s) at Tech: So far my favorite event has been the entrepreneurship panel put on by Professor Todd Tregidga. It was really interesting to gather knowledge from actual entrepreneurs. The panel was super great at answering questions and while this was a shorter event it was by far the most educational.
  5. A MUST that I carry in my backpack: A notebook is essential in my backpack. A lot of my classes are open note tests and so it can ease the load on your studying if you take good notes and pay attention.

Lily KemmerLily Kemmer

Major: Environmental Engineering
Year: Junior
Hometown: Butte, Montana

  1. Favorite spot on campus: My favorite spot on campus is the Mill Building. I love going there to study or do homework, and being able to grab a coffee, when I need a break, is perfect.
  2. Favorite place to grab food off-campus: My favorite place to eat off campus is a tie between the Hummingbird Café and Taco Del Sol. The Hummingbird is great for breakfast on the weekends. I like going to Taco Del Sol when I need a quick meal. Both are great places.
  3. I cannot go a day without: I cannot go a day without my earbuds. I love listening to music while getting ready in the morning and on my way to class.
  4. Why Montana Tech: I chose Montana Tech because I fell in love with the old-style buildings in Butte and on campus. I also liked how welcoming the faculty were.
  5. Favorite time of year, at Tech: My favorite time of year, at Tech is for sure fall, because I love seeing the trees slowly become a rainbow of colors as the season changes.

  1. What I love about Butte: I love all of the history Butte has to offer.
  2. Favorite event(s) at Tech: My favorite event at Tech so far has been the Career Fairs. They are a great way to make connections with potential employers.
  3. Campus involvement: I am on the Mining Team.
  4. Favorite Residence Hall: My favorite Residence Hall is the Living Learning Center (LLC).
  5. My hero: My dad is definitely my hero!

Major: Petroleum Engineering

Hometown: Missoula, Montana

  1. One thing I cannot go a day without: I cannot go a day without caffeine. In copious amounts. 
  2. Favorite class at Tech: My favorite class at Tech was the First Year Engineering Seminar. All first year students have this class to learn about all of our engineering options. Although it seems a bit tedious, it played a huge role in helping me decide what I wanted to pursue. Plus I met some great people along the way. 
  3. What I love about Butte: I love the outdoor activities you can do around Butte. My personal favorite is fishing. Especially at the Big Hole River. The views are amazing. 
  4. Favorite place to grab food off campus: My favorite spot off campus to grab food is La Sirena. They serve some of the best Mexican food I have ever had. If you go, I recommend the taco box! It’s birria tacos with enough cheese to stop a heart.
  5. Favorite spot on campus: My favorite spot on campus has to be the Museum Building, for many reasons. Firstly, it’s close to a parking lot which is a big must in the winter. It is open late, so I can procrastinate. Plus, it has great views outside the coolest doors on campus, and if you like geology you can take a break and visit the Mineral Museum, on the second floor.

Sophomores

Audrie JensenAudrie Jensen

Major: Petroleum Engineering
Year: Sophomore
Hometown: Laurel, Montana

  1. Why Montana Tech: I chose to attend Montana Tech because it was a smaller-sized school in a great town. It’s also not to close to home, but not too far, for me!
  2. Favorite class at Tech: I loved Principles of Micro & Macro Economics. Professor Doug Abbot definitely knows how to engage a classroom and make a basic class fun and interesting. 
  3. Involvement on campus: On campus, I am a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers and I am the secretary of the American Association of Drilling Engineers. I am also a Student Prospector!
  4. Favorite Residence Hall: It’s a crazy opinion, but my favorite Residence Hall is Prospector Hall! It’s the oldest Residence Hall on campus, but you’ll find the most entertainment there. 
  5. In 5 years I hope to be: In five years I hope to be in a management position for an oil and gas company. Maybe even in a different country!

Hannah GingeryHannah Gingery

Major: Electrical Engineering
Year: Sophomore
Hometown: Havre, Montana

  1. My weirdest study hack: My weirdest study hack is the following pre-test ritual:
    1. I will rewrite or annotate all of my notes over again.
    2. I will lock myself in a study room in the Student Success Center and create a mind map. (Think flow-chart full of doodles).
    3. Eat dinner, watch a horrible movie that I’ve seen a million times, and fall asleep by 9PM.
  2. Campus involvement: On campus I am both a tutor and tutee at the Academic Center of Excellence (ACE). It’s a welcome space with great energy! I’m also a part of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE), where I’ve found a supportive community of fellow female engineers.  
  3. Research projects: I'm passionate about clean energy. My interest began with installing solar panels with my dad on our pickup camper and building a windmill for our chicken coop. I think it’s fascinating to be able to use the resources that are already there working with the earth instead of against it.  
  4. One thing I cannot go a day without: I can't go a day without listening to music!  
  5. A MUST that I carry in my backpack: I always have to have my planner on me. I think it’s responsible for my GPA.  

Jackson WalkerJackson Walker

Major: Business & Information Technology
Year: Sophomore
Hometown: Kalispell, Montana

  1. What I love about Butte: I love that Butte takes care of its people. Compared to other places, it is obvious that once you’re here, you are a part of the family. Whether it’s the faculty at tech, or a local business owner, there is a distinct hospitality that Butte offers.  
  2. Favorite event(s) at Tech: My favorite events at Tech are the football games. Tailgating before the games with your friends is hard to beat. The people of Butte take a lot of pride in supporting the Orediggers and their involvement makes it more special to be a part of.  
  3. Favorite class at Tech: My favorite class at Tech, is probably BGEN 285 (Critical Thinking, Decision Making, and Leadership). In that class, I was pushed to think creatively and not how I normally would. There are in-depth discussions about heated topics that are relevant to everyone in the class. I would highly recommend this class to anyone.
  4. Favorite spot on campus: My favorite spot on campus is the Student Success Center. It has a great view of Bob Green field and of Butte. There’s also food available, dual monitor computers and tutoring around the corner. It’s by far the best spot on campus. 
  5. My hero: My hero is David Goggins. David is an accomplished Navy Seal whose words of wisdom changed my life. His books “Can’t Hurt Me” and “Never Finished” are New York Times best sellers, and he continues to inspire millions more today.

  1. The animal I most relate to or identify with: The animal I feel like I can most identify with is a fox, considering it is my last name. 
  2. Why Montana Tech: I chose to attend Montana Tech not only for the amazing location, views, history, and affordability, but for the incredible Geological Engineering program at Tech. There aren’t many schools in the United States that offer my degree, but Tech is one of them and I couldn’t be happier with my decision. 
  3. Favorite time of year, at Tech: This might not be everyone’s answer, but my favorite time of year, at Tech is winter. Something about campus covered in snow is truly breathtaking. Though I do still enjoy a 70-degree sunny day. 
  4. Favorite spot on campus: My favorite spot on campus is the top floor of the library. It’s the perfect place to study when you need some good peace and quiet. 
  5. What I love about Butte: I love that Butte has a lot of personality and a lot of things to do and see. Butte also has an incredible amount of history, and great restaurants. I’d personally recommend anything at the M&M.
