2016 Environmental Engineering Design Team - Montana Tech
A team of Montana Tech students took First Place in an international competition on environmental safety in Norway. The five students traveled to Stavanger for the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Conference and beat 17 other teams from around the world in a quiz on safety and environmental responsibility in engineering. Each team was posed with questions in three topics: health and safety, security, and social security.
The Montana Tech team was very proud of being the only team representing the United States in the competition. The team consisted of Eric Hull and Betsy Speare, Environmental Engineering; Rachel Farris and Kim Kavran, Safety, Health & Industrial Hygiene; and Kelly Hertel, Petroleum Engineering and Environmental Engineering. The team advisor was Kumar Ganesan, Environmental Engineering Department Head.
The team was given the opportunity to compete in Norway when they took the top spot at the inaugural Student Challenge at the national 2015 SPE Health, Safety, Security and Environmental Conference in Denver, Colorado on March 16-18. Montana Tech finished ahead of the second place team by nearly 10 points. The SPE president visited Montana Tech shortly after the competition.
