Shannon Scholarships to be presented to Butte High and Butte Central

On Thursday, January 16, Montana Tech will present each high school in Butte with $4,000 in scholarships at the Butte High vs. Butte Central game at the Butte Civic Center. The scholarships will be awarded to one female and male student at Butte High School and one female and one male student at Butte Central Catholic High School. The scholarships are from the Kevin and Joan Shannon Scholarship Club at Montana Tech. “The Shannon Fund provides great opportunities for Butte kids to take their lives to extraordinary levels of success,” said Joe McClafferty, Vice Chancellor for Advancement and University Relations and President of the Montana Tech Foundation. “In my conversations with industry around the world, I constantly hear that our graduations are hardworking, resilient problem solvers who make great teammates. That description always reminds of Butte people--like Kevin and Joan and the many donors who give to the Shannon Scholarship Fund. I am excited that this great opportunity exists to better our community.”

In 1986 Kevin Shannon, a local Butte businessman, and his wife, Joan, started a scholarship club to support local students attending Montana Tech. Since that time, the Kevin and Joan Shannon Scholarship has positively impacted nearly 350 students pursuing a post-secondary education at Montana Tech. The scholarship has provided over $160,000 in scholarship dollars to students in our community.

“I would like to thank everyone who has supported this scholarship,” noted Joan Shannon. “This scholarship’s main goal has been to help incoming freshman start their college education. I am so excited that this fund has helped 350 Butte kids get on the path to success. I want to see the fund continue and help another 350 students so we can continue to positively impact Butte and it’s outstanding, hardworking students.”
