Welcome to Montana Tech!

We are excited to have you join us. The Oredigger Family includes students and alumni from all over the world. In order to get to campus, we'll need you to follow a few steps. If you have questions, don't hesitate to reach out.

Admitted Student Procedures and Resources

Living on campus allows students to become more connected and engaged with the campus community and can improve your overall academic experience. All students are welcome to live in the Montana Tech residence halls. If you are a new, first-time college student, you must adhere to Montana Tech’s first-year live-on requirement.

Housing is assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. If you would like to request a specific hall or a single room, apply early. Applications received before April 1st will receive priority consideration.

For complete details on costs, room and meal plan options, and how to apply, visit the Residence Life pages.

Class registration for new incoming students opens in May for the Fall/Summer semesters or November for the Spring semester and remains open until the Friday before classes begin.

International students are encouraged to register early to ensure a full class schedule for the semester. If you are not registered into at least 12 credits, you will be out of status with your F-1 visa and/or I-20 requirements and risk not being able to attend Montana Tech for the semester. Please review the academic calendar for your entry year for specific deadlines.

Follow the steps below to complete the registration process.

  1. Review your Admission File

To register for classes, your admission file must be complete. If any items are missing, or you have not been admitted to Montana Tech, you are not eligible to register for classes. Review your admission checklist on your personalized Montana Tech website and submit any remaining items as soon as you are able. Items can be emailed to the Enrollment Services office or sent to:

    Montana Tech
    Enrollment Services
    1300 West Park Street
    Butte, MT 59701
    USA

Please note: The I-20 item on your checklist will be completed by Montana Tech and not you.

If you need to review your admission requirements, you can do so on the international admissions page.

    Math & Writing Requirements

In order to register for classes, Montana Tech needs to have official math and writing scores on file to determine which classes you are eligible to take. This can be determined using test scores or prior college transcripts. If you received notification that a Placement Exam is required to satisfy this requirement, we do not have enough information about your academic preparedness to register you for classes.

    Placement Exam

The Placement Exam is a Math and Writing placement exam that is available at many universities throughout the United States. If you do not have access to a testing center where you can complete the Placement Exam before arriving to Montana Tech, you will be required to take it during our Orientation Program.

Please note: Students who do not score high enough on the Placement Exam may not be granted admission into their desired program of study. Montana Tech recommends completing the Placement Exam or submitting ACT or SAT scores prior to arriving on campus, so you know as soon as possible if you may begin in your chosen program of study.

  2. Contact your Advisor

    International First-Year Students

When your admission file is complete, you may contact the following academic representative by email to register for classes.

    Academic Advisor

    Engineering Programs: Clifton Braddy
    Non-Engineering Programs: Heather Lingle

    International Transfer Students

When your admission file is complete, a Montana Tech transcript evaluator will review your transcripts and determine which credits will transfer to your chosen degree program. After they have completed the evaluation, the evaluator will notify you in an email about the number of credits accepted and provide you with instructions on how to register for classes.

Orientation is an exciting part of transitioning to college life and is an important part of becoming a Montana Tech Student. Plan to arrive on campus the week before classes begin to explore the academic, cultural, and social opportunities on campus and within the Butte community.

In addition to the general orientation activities, a special break-out session for international students will also be held. This session is mandatory and will help you become more familiar with the campus, the expectations of a U.S. college, and the steps you need to complete to remain in status with your visa/I20 requirements. Refer to the orientation schedule for session times.

Arrival Instructions

All new students are required to attend orientation. Make sure your travel arrangements allow for an early arrival and that you have all of the proper documentation needed to enter the U.S., including a passport that will remain valid for the entire academic year.
